Your 2017 (first published in The Lady magazine)

Aries

March 21-April 20

‘Major makeover’ sums up the first half of 2017 with Venus (planet of style) in your sign for ages, from February to June. Life urges a refinement of appearance that stylishly tells the world about the real you - and this ‘repackaging’ builds your professional or social allure from mid-April onwards. Popularity also is under happy stars - many of you this year will find a new partner, business or intimate. A career reward is due in December - if you’ve toiled hard.

Taurus

April 21-May 21

Choices are a luxury - and believe me, you really do have many. Problem is, you may not be entirely certain what or who you want. Make the most of the first half of 2017 to reflect and assess the past in helping you make a decision. From June, it’s rebirth-time as ruler Venus brings pizzazz back to life. From October, social life really does step up, and a one-year phase commences in which new professional contacts and team-work are the hallmark.

Gemini

May 22-June 21

2017 starts in the midst of a personal renaissance - if you’re not aware of this yet, you will be! This creative reverie jars somewhat with the rather severe approach you’ve taken to certain people in your circle throughout 2016, but it’s important to weed out those who are unreliable fair-weather allies. This trend continues in 2017, but from April onwards you’ll have a better sense of whom to trust. From October, a project enters a fulfilling phase in which attention to detail is rewarded.

Cancer

June 22-July 22

If 2016 brought certain work-day or health problems to light, be confident that a solution is found, if not already then certainly in 2017. This development is tied to domestic life, and though it may not necessarily feel like it right now, something very constructive is emerging in the home or family. Professional bonds are being tested yet from April you gain a stronger sense of how valued you are. And from October, you embark on a long phase of personal and creative growth.

Leo

July 23-August 23

You seek diversion - a metaphorical amuse-bouche (or ‘mouth-amuser’) to refresh a jaded appetite. Yes, you think you’ve seen it all. Except that you have not. Venus stirs up your spirit of adventure. By June, then, you have quite a different idea of fun from that of 2016! This could be to do with love, travel or intellectual stimulation. 2017 has a feeling of ‘education’ about it, you’re learning the ropes - and some of you may move home late in the year.

Virgo

August 24-September 23

How sweet is your 2017 chart: friendship, parties and potential new loves. A major theme of the first half of the year is your pursuit of a heart’s desire, animal, mineral or vegetable! But is he/she/it affordable? You may, for instance, desire a new home but not until April-June will you know whether it’s within your means. Saturn ensures that you must stay real over resources, though ‘lucky’ Jupiter up to September can grant a material wish if limits are respected.

Libra

September 24-October 23

Fickleness has made you notorious. And 2017 will confirm to many people your tendency to dally, tease, promise, tickle - and then dump! What’s really happening is that you’re processing people’s value to you but doing it with an ever-deceptive smile. This may apply to business, too: you’re seeking the truth behind the puff for a guaranteed profit margin. Much of this year brings opportunities for amazing self-growth; and September-October sets you up for a financial advantage in later 2017 or 2018.

Scorpio

October 24-November 22

This is a year of two halves. January to June, there’s a build up towards a big change in your work or home life, either in the people around you or in daily routines. Something desired requires you to ‘travel’ lighter; and in May, a sudden decision helps make this so. July to December, the sense since 2016 of a behind-the-scenes preparation is proved worthwhile, especially around October-time when prosperous Jupiter enters your sign. The struggle has been worth it.

Sagittarius

November 23-December 21

If in the last year or you’ve been ‘playing’ someone or at something, the long Venus retrograde in the first half of 2017 impels you to get serious, because this could be the start of something momentous. What is ‘this’? Love? Work? Possibly; but in general, whatever expresses your heart. Ruler Jupiter has made you popular with like-minded groups since 2016, and this continues till October when good fortune turns to inward reflection: get thee to a spa for spiritual workouts.

Capricorn

December 22-January 20

An ongoing sharp awareness of the past means you’re less likely to repeat follies of old; and that’s worth celebration. Rarely has a year promised so much in terms of inner muscle for whatever must be addressed. The home or family sphere is a source of greater satisfaction because Venus is presenting you with options. From June, you are freer to devote more energy to ‘me-time’. Despite some angst, your career is on the up; and from September, business really can start to boom.

Aquarius

January 21-February 19

Normally you welcome all-sorts to your world, yet in the phase to June, you decide that if life (as you know it) won’t seek you, you will truffle it out. Plainly, you need the company of fellow-travellers; people who are on your wave-length (not nay-saying nits) for creative success; and by late May you’re firing on all your pioneering cylinders. Career is likely to be the beneficiary of this social realignment, particularly from October, even if Saturn insists you check out parasites among newcomers.

Pisces

February 20-March 20

Winning the Lottery cannot be assured, but the next best thing can be: a greater willingness in you to do your damndest (finally!) to get your money situation in order. The impulse may arise from the longings of window shopping, but Venus gives you a long period to June to make the most of business or other opportunity. To September, co-ruler Jupiter helps you to win the goodwill of partners, while an event in late 2017 invites hard work if glory is sought.

The Queen’s horoscope confirms so much of what we know of her already, but it also sheds intriguing light on areas normally hidden even from assiduous royal biographers. Is it a matter of ‘fate’ that she should have reached the age of 90, is Britain’s longest reigning monarch, and has enjoyed 68 years of marriage to Prince Philip?

Born 21 April 1926, the Queen has the dependability, quiet determination and charm associated with her Sun sign Taurus. But longevity is bestowed (as potential) on her by a very prominent Saturn which in astrology represents authority, responsibility and long life. At the time of her birth (2:40 am, London), Capricorn was rising on the eastern horizon, and this sign is ruled by Saturn. And Saturn itself in her chart is almost on the same spot as her ‘public life point’, called the Midheaven. So, her adherence to tradition and protocol is not just part of the job, it is integral to her nature. This explains her cool, no-nonsense exterior and dignity.

Supporting this monolithic image is her lionhearted Moon in Leo – the sign of theatre and exuberance. Emotionally she is set up both to be centre of attention and to entertain on a grand scale. This Moon also has a comic side – suggested by the Queen’s reported private gift for irreverent mimicry.

An essentially romantic nature is assured by Venus (planet of relationships) in Pisces (sign of imagination). She is dreamier, needier, than perhaps we can ever know. But her Venus is a ‘happy’ one because it forms a helpful angular link to Pluto: through love she is transformed, and marriage is for keeps, whatever obstacles faced. Incidentally, Prince Philip’s Venus is close to the Queen’s Sun, and he shares her rising sign in Capricorn: so their romantic, social and public life domains are mutually supportive. This was always going to be a long-term, quite passionate union.

Will the Queen ever abdicate? Most unlikely, given this chart, though she will continue to delegate. If anything her popularity rises this year as lucky Jupiter moves towards the top of her horoscope, refreshing her profile. With progressed Venus (ruling Taurus) sharing the cosmic stage with her progressed rising point, there is if anything every indication of a personal resurgence.

Aries

March 21-April 20

Health continues to preoccupy, and the great news is that the more you strive to improve diet/exercise/life balance, the better you’ll feel in 2016. Sense of personal power is growing, so do watch your step around April and October when sparks could fly with bosses or ‘authority’. If you can channel immense energy into patient calculation (not always your strong point!) this is likely to be a great year for career and status. From September anytime onwards, a special someone can transform your life – romantically or professionally.

Taurus

April 21-May 21

Money is the big issue of 2016 because wealth determines how far you can go to realise a dream – you are applying a surprisingly cool eye to shared or partnership resources or to borrowings. Same with certain relationships: whatever’s no longer working is more likely to be ‘shredded’. An urge to stamp your passion on the world dominates 2016. On the quiet, you’re very keen to shake-up your life… and it’s entirely possible that one restriction is successfully challenged.

Gemini

May 22-June 21

A ‘revolution’ is underway in the family area. Many of you will be making a residential move or major changes to a home in 2016 – and this is all for the better in August, November or December. Meanwhile one area of your life requires you to (shock horrors!) make a commitment and take on more responsibility – this could be for business or romantic progress. Careerists among you should look to March for a promotion while August suggests cash improvement linked to the home.

Cancer

June 22-July 22

You’re at the realisation that hiding away under that crab shell is not going to get you places very fast. So, 2016 will be a very social year when you’re expanding your circle of friends and acquaintances. Erratic developments at work continue to unsettle you: April could be a month when you fly to a new workplace (or assume new duties) – and/or October is a month when you could break through a glass ceiling, thanks to allies. From September (for about a year), home/family improvements can be expected.

Leo

July 23-August 23

At last there’s the real possibility of making material gains, and March and October are especially well starred for income growth and/or business development. Much effort will be put into striving to do whatever expresses a personal passion - be this artistic or hobbyist - and success is indicated. Leos in general will be taking many more breaks from routine life; and your natal can-do spirit will reign as you set out to leave behind whatever feels like life-clutter. From September, social life picks up.

Virgo

August 24-September 23

Quite a few of your friends are wondering whether you’re having a personality ‘re-assignment’ as you display much greater boldness in breaking into a new territory, whatever that is. While this is ongoing, June is great for career; and August is marked for a personal break-through – which could be to do with travel or education. The home area continues to draw out your rigorous, practical side, with the likelihood of domestic tensions at times. Your laudable intention to solidify the material security of loved ones is a winner.

Libra

September 24-October 23

An odd feature of much of 2016 is the extent to which circumstances ask you to be discreet or even secretive: so much can be achieved through whispers and behind closed doors, so relax that showbiz side of your personality! From June, life gets a lot more active - an ‘adventure’ is likely, which could be a travel trip or new study. From September, there’s a sense of ‘rebirth’ when more doors open to you; but it would be folly to forget lessons learnt in the past year. Maintain a big heart.

Scorpio

October 24-November 22

The challenge this year is somehow to maintain a diplomatic façade while trying to rein in strong impulses to be obnoxiously assertive. Much can be gained in February-March provided that you don’t over-play your hand. It’s more like you to be guileful or crafty, and that’s precisely what you must be if you wish to make progress – in May especially. From September, life benefits are more likely to accrue from altruistic endeavours – yet a past ‘lost’ opportunity could reappear, giving you a second chance to make good.

Sagittarius

November 23-December 21

Gregarious though you are, the inner climate remains very sober indeed as you examine with greater determination many areas of your life – you’re keen to move on from any situation that is now redundant. February, July and August are key months of change, in the career area especially, where you’re re-motivated to take on new work that’s (i) ground-breaking and (ii) more in keeping with personal ambitions. From September, business networking or benevolent work begins to assume a greater role in your success.

Capricorn

December 22-January 20

Yes, for many Cappies, sundry restrictions will have been most irksome in recent times. 2016 is a year of some kind of liberation, though whether this is through study, travel, work or a new life perspective only you can discover. Pertinent to this, July to September is the phase to watch for opportunity or just fortuitous turn of events. From September, career or status-improving positive vibes descend on you, and for the next year or two, expect significant developments which can take you to new places.

Aquarius

January 21-February 19

In 2016 you’re putting much more energy than usual into cultivating allies likely to be of use to your business or altruistic interests – and why not? Socially, this is a highly expansive year when new bonds or partners may prove to be both profitable and emotionally satisfying. April will be a bit stormy as you give the heave-ho to someone or something – just try to be fair and avoid impulse talk/kicking. From September onwards, a new, larger world beckons, and many of you will be looking overseas for new inspiration.

Pisces

February 20-March 20

A new friend of ‘benefactor’ is proving to be most useful as you enter 2016 – the good news is that this influence is set to continue. Much good fortune can be expected through display of charm and diplomacy because till September you have the happy habit of interesting the right people – indeed, February and April, November and December are hotspots for career advancement. From September, the material returns from new associations are more likely to be forthcoming – and any strong relationship is likely to move to the next stage.

As President Barack Obama is inaugurated a second time, I am republishing my astrological prediction of November 2 2012 of his re-election:

Elections, astrologically, are a nightmare challenge to call and the imminent US Election is particularly complex (actually, not just astrologically). The wise stargazers sit on the fence - the Mail's Jonathan Cainer has declared that the result will be unambiguous - but declines to say which candidate will win. Marjorie Orr (though seeming to back Romney) announces that election forecasting is too tricky.

Both are probably right - to watch their backs. I, however, put caution to the wind.

Barack Obama is a Leo, born August 4, 1961, 7.24pm, in Honolulu. Mitt Romney is a Pisces, born March 12, 1947, 9.51am, in Detroit, Michigan.

Having examined the birth charts of Obama and Romney, and the transits for election day November 6, 2012, and for Inauguration Day January 20, 2013, I have reached the conclusion that Obama will be re-elected. Those who prefer Romney may take comfort that both charts are pretty dire and that there's little to indicate a decisive victory, astrologically. I have based my forecast decision on just a handful of aspects as clinchers.

Non-astrologers may have already read enough. Those interested in astrology may want to read on....

For election day itself, the transits of both men's charts lack an obvious winner. But on November 6, Obama's tr Moon is in Leo conjunct his ruler Sun and Mercury (in the 6th) - a good omen for group efforts and the support of women in particular. Obama's progressions look favourable on this day, with P Mercury sextile North Node, P Venus sextile Venus and P Pluto sextile Neptune, among others.

There are plenty of negative aspects to spoil the day, however; not least Mercury stationing retrograde which at the very least could suggest a slim victory or even controversy over the result. I shouldn't be surprised if there are technical hitches or legal tussles.

Romney's transits for November 6 are especially grim in my view: his ruler tr Neptune, though at the top of his chart, squares his natal ascendant, an ego-denying aspect and not the sort of thing you expect to see in a winning chart. Nor do I like tr Moon conjunct natal Saturn in his 3rd house of communications: a sign of possible depression or isolation.

I have also looked at the transits for Inauguration Day, January 20, 2013. This perhaps offers a clearer picture. In Obama's chart, tr Sun (conjunct tr Mercury) is conjunct natal Jupiter in the 12th: a sign of optimism, positivity and expansion. This to me is the clincher (famous last words?). But it's not all bad news for Romney on this day. His tr Jupiter is trine Midheaven, a plus indicator for career and status, but an aspect inferior to Obama's Sun-Jupiter conjunction. And Romney's ruler Neptune is still square ascendant.

So, there we have it. Republicans should take heart that a fair number of reputable astrologers think Romney's got it in the bag. You'll have to Google them.

On August 5 2012 I wrote an astrological forecast for the Mars rover Curiosity Lander mission - before it landed. Two-thirds of Mars missions have ended in disaster so statistically the prospects for Curiosity were not brilliant to say the least. I am reprinting the forecast - mainly because NASA is about to announce an important Martian Curiosity discovery, so I read in the newspapers. In the forecast, I wrote that the Lander would arrive safely and expand our knowledge.

At around 5.30am GMT (6.30am BST in the UK), on August 6, we should know whether the nuclear powered Mars rover Curiosity Lander has arrived safely on the planet after a 350m-mile trip. Its mission is to find signs of life. So what does astrology have to say about its chances of landing safely - given that many Martian adventures have ended in tears.

It's a tricky question because horoscopes do not speak in plain headlines. They require interpretation - this is as much an art as methodology. And do you know anyone who's infallible - such as your doctor, lawyer or particle physicist? No. Nonetheless, I have asked the question; so, here we go.....

The Placidus chart is drawn up for 26 November 2011, Cape Canaveral, Florida, 10:02am (local time; 15:02 UT): the place and time of Curiosity's launch. This places the mission's Sun in Sagittarius (expansion and exploration) in the 11th House - the house of space technology, among other things. Mercury retrograde (communication and travel) is also in the 11th while Uranus (science) sits in the 3rd (ruled by Mercury) along with a generally strong Jupiter.

These are very constructive and promising positions notwithstanding Mercury retrograde which at the very least may indicate delay of some sort - but the precise effect of retrogrades is still uncertain.

I

Other indicators are also positive. I like Mars in Virgo in the 8th: this describes the huge energy and exacting detailed work poured into this project: Mars is also part of an Earth Grand trine to Pluto and Jupiter, symbolising the dogged, delving practical application of knowledge in pushing back frontiers.

With this set-up I would be surprised if the mission is a failure.

There are problems in the chart. Mars is opposite Neptune, but the orb is very wide (9 degrees) which may simply denote the necessity of unclouded intellect. This opposition apexes in the 11th House Sun in a mutable t-square - perhaps repeating the point I've just made: science rules energy and aspiration. Saturn (limitation, responsibility) in the 9th house (exploration; long-distance travel) may be taken as a bad omen by some, but since this is not an accident-prone chart, the planet here may tell of the mission's huge undertaking and dedication to expanding knowledge.

So, Curiosity should land safely. And what of the mission itself, to find life? Saturn sextile Mercury could suggest that the short trips the lander embarks on will be successful if not productive. Pluto (sub-surface investigation) linked to Mercury by stellium, also sextiles Saturn - another good sign. Sun trine Uranus in Aries is excellent for broadening knowledge.
